Red Cross Preparedness programs in First Aid, CPR and AED are available for any age and can be tailored to the needs of specific groups and individuals. Whether you work with children, want training for employees, or simply want to know how to help someone in an emergency, the Bermuda Red Cross has a program for you. 

We train people to help others who are in need of CPR and/or First Aid. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) courses are also available to train individuals to administer early defibrillation to those suffering from sudden cardiac arrest. Babysitting courses certify students 12 – 16 years of age on how to be responsible, prepared and effective babysitters. CPR for the professional rescuer, oxygen administration and Bloodborne pathogen courses are also available for individuals. We also offer Ideals in Action course, which gives the participant general knowledge about the International Red Cross movement and how the local entities tie in.

Courses are taught Monday through Thursday – 8:45 am – 1 pm or 5:45 pm– 10 pm

Medical Conditions:
The courses below are physically challenging, if you cannot spend at least 1 1/2 hours on the floor to do the full practical sessions we will not certify. Participants who have had recent elbow, knee, hip, heart, lung, or back surgery or other issues such as severe arthritis, emphasyma, or you have breathing difficulties please check with your doctor BEFORE taking the course.

Attendance Policy:
In our continuing efforts to provide the best customer service to our participants and due to our limited class size, we need to ensure that participants attend the courses that they schedule. If a participant schedules a course and does not attend this limits us from allowing the opportunity for another participant to attend the course. Therefore, in fairness to all participants,
participants who do not attend their scheduled classes will forfeit the course fees.

Course fees are non-refundable. Participants are able to reschedule 48 hours prior to the original course date.

Course descriptions:


CFAS – Community First Aid and Safety

This course certifies in Adult, Infant and Child CPR and Basic First Aid. Participants learn how to perform CPR and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, infants and children. Participants learn first aid skills for treating a variety of injuries, such as burns, wounds, head, neck and back injuries and heat and cold emergencies. Participants also learn how to manage sudden illnesses, stroke, seizures, and poisoning. This course is taught 1 day or evening a week for 3 consecutive weeks. CPR certification is valid for 1 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify, First Aid certification is valid for 3 years plus a 3-month grace period.

RECERT – CPR Recertification
This course recertifies in Adult, Infant & Child CPR. In order to take this course you must hold a valid CPR certificate or be within 3 months of expiry. We recognize only 1-year certification regardless of issuing agency. This course is taught 1 day or evening.

CPR certification is valid for 1 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify.

Total Classroom Time: Adult CPR/Infant & Child CPR: 3 ½ hours; Adult CPR: 2 hours

Costs:
Adult CPR/Infant & Child CPR: $50.00; Saturdays: $75.00
Adult CPR: $30.00; Saturdays: $55.00

AED – Automated External Defibrillators
This course certifies in the use of AED for adults. Participants will learn when and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) on adult victims in cardiac arrest. Participants must be current in Adult CPR in order to take this course.

AED certification is valid for 1 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify.

Total Classroom Time: 3 hours

Costs:
$30.00; Saturdays: $55.00

Administering Emergency Oxygen

This course certifies in Administering Emergency Oxygen. Participants learn the skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen. Participants must be current in Adult CPR in order to take this course.

Administering Emergency Oxygen certification is valid for 1 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify.

Bloodborne Pathogens

This course certifies in Bloodborne Pathogens. Participants will learn how infections occur, how bloodborne pathogens spread and how to identify tasks that have a potential for exposure to infectious material.

Bloodborne Pathogesn certification is valid for 1 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer

This course is designed for people with job-related duties in emergency preparedness and responses and is intended for nurses, doctors, law enforcement, fire fighters, and EMT’s. This course teaches how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. Participants will learn how to perform rescue breathing, CPR/two-rescuer CPR, when and how to use an AED, first aid for choking and use of resuscitation mask and bag-valve mask resuscitator, disease transmission prevention and the systems of the body. This course is taught 1 day a week for 2 consecutive weeks.

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certification is valid for 2 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify.

Babysitting

This course is for young people aged 12 - 16 years and teaches the needed skills to be an effective Babysitter. This course runs for 7 hours on each of the 4 days. This course looks at fundamentals of good business practice, age appropriate play and behaviour and much, much more. This course also certifies in Infant & Child CPR and Basic First Aid. The course now includes guest speakers on topics such as: asthma, diabetes, correct baby handling and more.

CPR certification is valid for 1 year plus a 3-month grace period in which to recertify, First Aid certification is valid for 3 years plus a 3-month grace period.

Total Classroom Time: 7 hours on each of the 4 days

Instructor Training

This course trains volunteers to become instructors for the Bermuda Red Cross. In order to take this course participants must be certified and current in Adult, Infant & Child CPR, Basic First Aid, and AED. This course is scheduled at a mutually agreeable time.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

  • To have a desire to teach members of the public to be more prepared in a crisis or emergency.
  • To be able to commit to teach a minimum of two community first aid and safety courses (CFAS) and two recertification courses to keep their teaching certification current.

All activities take place in pool and classroom environment and each course offered has a mandatory swimming skills test prior to the actual start.

GuardStart: Lifeguarding Tomorrow
This training program is designed to guide youth ages 11-14 through the Lifeguarding program by building a foundation of knowledge, attitudes and skills for becoming future Lifeguards. This foundation consists of five categories: Prevention, Fitness, Response, Leadership and Professionalism.

Total Classroom Time: 52 hours

Costs:
$225.00 includes books, testing and classes.

  • Bermuda Red Cross has partnered with Duke of Edinburgh to offer a Bronze Level certification in beginning lifeguarding – GuardStart. If you require further information about this programme, please contact your DoE coordinators

Junior Lifeguard:
This course focuses on swimming pools and enclosed swimming areas. The student learns extensive water rescue techniques as well as patron supervision in the aquatic environment. They also receive training in First Aid, CPR and AED for the Professional rescuer and other necessary skills to prevent and respond in an aquatic emergency.

This program is open to 15 and 16 year olds.

Total Classroom Time: 36 hours

Costs:
$325.00 includes all books, skills sessions and testing.
